New to Finland: Where to buy?

Viesti Kirjoittaja Bees »

I recently moved to Finland, and currently have an empty tank sitting in my living room because I don't know where to buy anything. Over time, I'd like to add Panda Corydoras, Lemon Tetra (Hyphessobrycon pulchripinnis), Ember Tetra (Hyphessobrycon amandae), and probably some shrimp and Otocinclus. I also used to have Mystery Snails (Pomacea Diffusa), but I've read that all Pomacea are banned in the EU. Is that really true, ALL Pomacea? I haven't seen Diffusa mentioned, and they would neither survive the winters nor devastate the plants, at least in my experience of a planted tank. Diffusa were my favourite part of my old tank, and the only thing I ever named. :(

If all Pomacea really are banned... what kind of snails are allowed? Not nerites, as I'm saving nerites for my low-end brackish tank when I have money for a low-end brackish tank. And not Malaysian Trumpet Snails, because they'll probably find their way in anyway. I guess Pomacea are the only aquatic snails with syphons, anyway, which was what made them so special.

I also used to have Grass Shrimp (Palaemonetes paludosus) that were mislabeled and sold as Ghost Shrimp, but it's too hard to feed their larvae so I imagine I'll just get some red cherry shrimp. They may or may not get their own tank, we'll see how it goes.

So my main questions are:
- Do you order fish online and have them delivered? I've never done this before, but there are none of the fish I want at local pet stores, and I can't even find aquarium specialty stores in the area. Also, my car is still in Canada, so I can't just drive to Helsinki or something.
- Where should I buy plants? Online, or try in shops?
- Are any of the following plants illegal: Anacharis, Anubias Nana, Christmas Moss, Dwarf Hairgrass, Java Fern, and Java Moss?
- What kind of snails are legal in Finland, if Pomacea Diffusa are illegal?
- Can I easily get Seachem Prime and Seachem Stability in Finland, or will I have to import them? Also, can I import them, or is that going to be a problem?
- Any recommendations for water testing kits? I thought I bought an all-in-one test kit, but it turns out I just bought a very expensive Nitrate test.
- What are some reputable websites to buy plants, fish, and accessories, that are based in Finland? I hate the idea of importing stuff.

Well, you didn't say where in Finland you moved to but I presume capital area. You could try Akvaariokeskus (http://akvaariokeskus.fi/) which is located in Helsinki Ruoholahti.

There is also Akvaariolinna (http://www.akvaariolinna.fi/) and Akvaariokurki (http://www.akvaariokurki.fi/) in Vantaa.

There is also handy online shop http://www.akvaarioon.fi/.

Too bad none of them have web pages in English, but maybe you can manage it (since browsers tend to offer to translate web pages to user's chosen language anyway).

Transferring live animals via mail is actually forbidden in Finland AFAIK.

As for test kits I've found this to be useful: http://www.akvaarioon.fi/epages/akvaari ... 4218188624

These might also work depending on your needs: http://www.akvaarioon.fi/epages/akvaari ... 4162255006

And: http://www.akvaarioon.fi/epages/akvaari ... 4162255105

As far as I know, none of the aquatic plants are illegal here. And yes, that snail ban is unfortunate nonsense.

Shrimps can be send well packed by parcel post from breeders, like me. You can contact anybody here by pushing the button -privat mail-YV on the right.
Tylomenia rabbitsnails are also available, if you love funny snails.

One shop not listed yet, but which does deserve a mention, is Kurki in Tikkurilla. Great selection, owner speaks very good English and is passionate about his store.

G,day,

I have recently moved from Australia to Finland (Helsinki Area-Järvenpää). I used to breed top quality discus (ICAs and German Blue Turquoise) in tropical Queensland. I am in the process of setting up my 450L show tank in Finland and would like to receive some good advise on buying high quality juvenile discus locally or from reputable overseas farms that supply the Finnish market. My Finnish language knowledge is very limited and I would be grateful for any advise in English.

Kind Regards
Mike

Hi Mike, I would go to Akvaario Kurki ( http://www.akvaariokurki.fi/ ) , Akvaariolinna ( https://www.akvaariolinna.fi/ ) or Järvenneito ( https://www.jarvenneito.fi/ ). Some also go shopping in Sweden ( https://www.tonysdiskus.se/ ). Tony have top quality discus fish for sure.

Akvaariolinna and Järvenneito maybe doesn´t have Discus fish rightway, but they can order you whatever you want.

In (greater) capital area I use mainly Järvenneito in Järvenpää or Akvaariokeskus in Helsinki.
